Functional Movement Re-Ttraining is designed to help you learn how to move your body more balanced with healthy muscle engagement. This includes improving dysfunctional or imbalanced movement patterns and correcting postural habits. Through this training, your body can unlearn habits that are contributing to pain, overstressed or weakened muscles, and injuries. Many movement habits can be learned as a result of bodily asymmetries, previous injuries, or weakened muscles. Your body may then learn to adjust your movement to compensate for the affected area. These changes can often wear away at tissue causing inflammation, progressive weakness or tension in the ligaments and muscles. The goal of this type of training is to prevent continuous irritation of tissue so that you can stay active. Functional movement re-training can also help with managing and improving pain.

What To Expect During Your Visit

When you begin your functional movement re-training you can expect to fill out a medical history and share some of the details of your injury and healing goals. You will then work with your Physiotherapist to learn more about your body and how it performs certain movements. Many actions of the body happens automatically and which muscles that become engaged in the movement are unconscious. Your physiotherapist will break down the specific muscles that are contributing to an activity and identify specific areas that are imbalanced or overstressed.

You will then be able to work on changing the way your brain performs those movements through movement re-training. The dysfunctional postural and movement habits will be gradually replaced by more balanced and sustainable habits. You may begin to notice areas that have been a chronically tense will begin to relax and muscles that have been weak become more activated.

As you learn to use the right muscles for daily activities your ability to perform prolonged movements will increase. Your physiotherapist will continue to observe your movement and help you to make adjustments. They will teach you exercises to do at home to continue to improve your unconscious movement habits and increase muscular balance.
