Deep tissue massages are effective for many chronic pain conditions including fibromyalgia. With this type of massage, your physiotherapist will put sustained and significant pressure on the deep tissue muscles and the connective tissue that surrounds them that is known as the fascia.

How Can Deep Tissue Massage Help?

Deep tissue massages are quite similar to the more common Swedish massage. The extra pressure applied by your therapist serves to stimulate deep layers of the muscle’s tissue, fascia, and tendons.

These techniques are used to ease the knots of pain in your muscles that, if not treated, can interfere with your circulation and result in severe pain, inflammation and limit your range of motion. They can also break up scar tissue and adhesions.

Chronic pain patients may experience some discomfort during treatment in contrast to other patients. Repeated treatments of those areas that cause you pain will ultimately ease your pain and suffering significantly.

Deep tissue massages are focused on addressing one specific treatment area. This is especially effective on stiff necks, upper back pain, shoulder pain, low back pain, and tight muscles in your legs.

What to Know About Deep Tissue Massages

While Deep Tissue Massages are not for everybody, those who follow the full course of treatment can expect improvement. You may feel a deep stretch during the treatment itself and feeling sore the next day is common for those new to Deep Tissue Massage. Feeling a little sore the next day is common for those new to Deep Tissue Massage. This discomfort should not be more than soreness, and it should not last more than a day or two

If you do experience pain or extended discomfort following treatment, you can discuss it with your practitioner. Make sure that you bring to the therapists attention any discomfort during the massage itself.

Whilst these patients may experience most discomfort during treatment, patients with chronic pain conditions such as Fibromyalgia are shown to achieve the greatest relief.

Osteoarthritis patients also benefit from Deep Tissue Massage as the treatments increase joint mobility and reduce the stiffness commonly experienced with the condition.
